History

The move to Butley from Laxfield of a community of artists took place in early 2003, it was a chance to set up a new bronze foundry, make a new home for the group and encourage new artists to get involved. The founding members of Butley Mills Studios included Laurence Edwards, Sian O’Keeffe, Stuart Anderson, Keir Smith and Chris Summerfield all of whom had connections going back many years to art colleges across the country and the Royal College of Art in London.

Since 2003, artists have come to work at the studios with its uniquely creative working atmosphere and wild location, often passing on their experience or welcoming the peace and quiet of the area whilst doing their own work. They have included Brian Taylor, Christopher Le Brun, Nigel Lofthouse, Kate Giles, Caroline Wright and many more.
